Poker

It is truly amazing how ESPN single-handedly created (recreated) the poker craze in recent years by televising the World Series of Poker. Judging by the fact that you can now purchase a set of poker chips from your local drugstore, eBay, or the closest Target, it's safe to assume that the popularity of the game is still on the rise.
On a related note, with the passage of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006, the fate of once-prevalent online gambling in the United States is unclear. Gambling online against strangers is not nearly as fun or exciting as playing in person with your buddies, anyways. Or, you and your buddies can always head to the nearest riverboat or Indian reservation casino, or Vegas, if you must get on the table. If/When you do, here's a random strategy for Limit Texas Hold'em:

After the flop, if (1) you are on a straight draw or a flush draw, (2) someone bets before you, AND (3) you are the last to act:
you should re-raise that bet.
Reasoning: assuming other players just call your bet, when/after the turn card is shown, they are likely to just check to you. At this point, if you've made the flush or straight, you can bet, or slow play it if it is the nuts. On the other hand, if you haven't made your straight or flush, you can just check, essentially getting to see the river without having to pay anything else.
Example: on a 3-6 limit table:
you have A-h and 10-h
the flop: Q-h, 7-h, and 3-c
two players in front of you, the second player bets ($3)
you should re-raise ($3 + $3)
the turn: 4-d
you have not made your flush, and the two players in front of you, assuming they merely called your re-raise in the previous round, are more likely than not just going to check

this is not complete, i'll finish it later, email me if it doesn't make sense and if you're interested.

Halloween, etc.

For Halloween, I made a giant paper clip, which took much longer than you'd expect, and cut out three round pieces of construction paper. Wearing a Duke cap and a tie, I was the paper-clipped, three-hole-punched, version of myself.

I got two reactions throughout the night, quite the opposite:
First type: "Oh... I love it, that is sooooo funny"; "I love the Office, [the paper clip is a nice touch]"; "aww... that is really cute" ('thanks ladies you are quite stunning yourselves.')
Second type: "Oh..." (accompanied by the face which says "you lazy, unoriginal piece of crap, I spent $50 and 5 hours on my super-hero costume).

The rest of the pictures from the night is here.

It was not a bad night.

Isaac's Wedding

Jacki and Isaac got married on July 29, 2006. I was one of the groomsmen, and even made a short speech at the reception. I'm not very good at speaking without preparation, and I didn't want to make a fool out of myself, or ramble in front of everyone, so I took a few minutes and wrote out what I wanted to say. Basically, I think they're both amazing and will have a wonderful life together.

On a different note, my 10-week summer associate experience was quite positive. I really enjoyed working for the firm. And it is always so nice to be home, thanks to families and friends who are here. It's hot here, but it's hot everywhere, the constant sea breeze, at least, is nice.

After a lengthy debate with myself that lasted for months, I finally went ahead and got XM radio. So far it's been great. Ask me about it if you're also interested.

888-Film

when you were in high school, did you ever call 888-Film (444-Film, or whatever other automated phone services), so that when your girlfriend/boyfriend/crush called back, the phone wouldn't ring and that your parents wouldn't know you're on the phone late?

White Rock, British Columbia

White Rock, British Columbia is a beautiful place, where, if you're a rich, should buy a vacation home, and where, if you're thinking about proposing to your girlfriend, should plan a trip there. (and since i'm not rich nor in a relationship... it's just a place that i plan to visit again sometime.)

New Survivor Show!!!

"
Have you heard about the next planned "Survivor" show?

Three businessmen and three businesswomen will be dropped into three
Elementary school classrooms for six weeks. Each business person will
be provided with a copy of his/her school district's curriculum, and a
class of 28 students. Each class will have five learning-disabled
children, three with A.D.D., one gifted child, and two who speak
limited English. Three will be labeled with severe behavior problems.

Each business person must complete lesson plans at least three days in
advance with annotations for curriculum objectives and modify,
organize, or create materials accordingly. They will be required to
teach students, handle misconduct, implement technology, document
attendance... Write referrals, correct homework, make bulletin boards,
compute grades, complete report cards... Document benchmarks,
communicate with parents, and arrange parent conferences, for
starters.

They must also supervise recess and monitor the hallways. In addition,
they will complete drills for fire, tornadoes, and shooting attacks.

They must attend 100 hours of workshops, faculty meetings, union
meetings, and curriculum development meetings.

They must also tutor those students who are behind and strive to get
their two non-English speaking children proficient enough to take the
SOL tests.

If they are sick or having a bad day, they must not let it show. Each
day they must incorporate reading, writing, math, science, and social
studies into their program. They must maintain discipline and provide
an educationally stimulating environment at all times.

The business people will only have access to the golf course on the
weekends, but on their new salary they will not be able to afford it
anyway. There will be no access to vendors who want to take them out
to lunch, and lunch will be limited to 30 minutes.

On days when they do not have recess duty, the business people will be
permitted to use the staff restroom as long as another survival
candidate is supervising their class.

They will be provided with two, 40-minute planning periods per week
while their students are at activity classes. If the copier is
operable, they may make copies of necessary materials at this time.

The business people must continually advance their own education on
their own time, and pay for this advanced training themselves. This
can be accomplished by moonlighting at a second job or marrying
someone with money.

The winner will be allowed to return to his or her former job."

Thank you Teachers.

Christmas break was wonderful/awesome as always, some pictures are up on my website.

i also went to Vegas for the first time; it was quite an experience. we stayed at the monte carlo, which i liked a lot, especially its location and the not-too-smokey casino area. poker room is small but nice.
